How long do Chihuahuas live?
The American Kennel Club gives a Chihuahua life expectancy of 14 to 16 years. Large UK vet studies show a much lower average, around 8 years. The gap comes from young deaths. Chihuahuas that avoid injury and early illness often live well into their teens.
Three sources give three different numbers, so it helps to know what each one measures.
| Source | What it measures | Years |
|---|---|---|
| AKC breed page | Typical range | 14 to 16 |
| VetCompass 2016 study | Median age at death | 8.2 |
| Teng et al. 2022 life tables | Life expectancy at birth | 7.91 |
The VetCompass study from the Royal Veterinary College looked at 11,647 Chihuahuas in UK clinics. The authors stress that the breed was in a popularity boom, so the group was young. Deaths in a young group skew toward accidents and early disease, which pulls the median down. The 2022 life tables show the same pattern. A Chihuahua's life expectancy at birth was 7.91 years, yet the table still had dogs alive at age 16.
What cuts Chihuahua lives short?
The VetCompass team listed the top grouped causes of death:
- Heart disease: 18.8 percent of deaths
- Lower airway and lung problems: 16.3 percent
- Traumatic injury: 13.8 percent
Injury stands out. A dog this small can be hurt by a fall from a sofa, a bigger dog, a door or a person who steps on it. The median adult weight in the study was just 3.4 kg (about 7.5 pounds). The AKC standard asks for no more than 6 pounds.
Common health problems in living Chihuahuas
- Periodontal (gum) disease: 13.5 percent of dogs in one year
- Obesity: 5.9 percent
- Retained baby teeth: 5.7 percent
- Anal sac impaction: 4.9 percent
- Aggression: 4.2 percent
Males were more likely than females to have aggression, heart murmurs, ear infections, eye infections and upper airway infections.
Chihuahua age in human years
A Chihuahua is about 15 in human years at age 1 and about 24 at age 2. After that, each year adds about 4 human years on the small dog chart. A 10 year old Chihuahua is about 56, and a 16 year old is about 80.
| Age | Human years | DNA clock |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 15 | 31 |
| 2 | 24 | 42 |
| 3 | 28 | 49 |
| 4 | 32 | 53 |
| 5 | 36 | 57 |
| 6 | 40 | 60 |
| 7 | 44 | 62 |
| 8 | 48 | 64 |
| 9 | 52 | 66 |
| 10 | 56 | 68 |
| 11 | 60 | 69 |
| 12 | 64 | 71 |
| 13 | 68 | 72 |
| 14 | 72 | 73 |
| 15 | 76 | 74 |
| 16 | 80 | 75 |
We use the small size chart because a Chihuahua weighs well under 20 pounds. The DNA clock column uses 16 × ln(age) + 31 from the UCSD study. That study used mostly Labradors, so for a Chihuahua it likely runs high. Trust the first column more.
When is a Chihuahua a senior?
The AVMA says senior age starts in the last quarter of expected life. Using the AKC range, that is about 10.5 to 12 years. The AVMA's own size guide puts small dogs at 8 to 11 years. In practice, ask your vet about twice yearly checks from around 8, and look closely at teeth, heart sounds and weight at each visit.
How to help a Chihuahua live longer
- Guard against falls and bumps. Use pet steps for beds and sofas. Teach children to sit on the floor to hold the dog.
- Brush teeth daily. Gum disease was the most common problem found. Ask your vet about dental cleanings and any baby teeth that do not fall out.
- Keep weight in check. One extra pound is a big share of a 6 pound body. Measure food and count treats.
- Know the heart signs. Coughing, fast breathing at rest or tiring quickly can point to heart disease, the top cause of death in the study.
- Train early and gently. Aggression was common, more so in males. Early social contact and reward based training help.
The VetCompass authors also warned about impulse buying of Chihuahua puppies. A puppy from a careful breeder who health checks the parents gives you a better start.

Chihuahua lifespan FAQ
How long do Chihuahuas live?
The AKC lists 14 to 16 years. UK vet clinic data shows a lower typical age at death, mostly because many young Chihuahuas died from injuries and illness. A healthy adult Chihuahua that gets good dental and home care has a fair chance of reaching its teens.
What is the oldest age a Chihuahua can reach?
In the UK life tables built by Teng and colleagues, the Chihuahua table ran to age 16, and some dogs were still alive at that age. Claims of Chihuahuas past 20 exist, but we could not confirm them in a peer reviewed source.
At what age is a Chihuahua a senior?
The AVMA calls a dog senior in the last 25 percent of its expected life. With the AKC range of 14 to 16 years, that starts at about 10.5 to 12 years. The AVMA size guide puts small dogs at 8 to 11.
How old is a 10 year old Chihuahua in human years?
About 56, using the small dog size chart. The UCSD DNA clock gives about 68, but it was built on Labradors and tends to make small dogs look older.
Do male or female Chihuahuas live longer?
In a VetCompass study of UK Chihuahuas, females that died had a median age of 10.2 years and males 6.9 years. That gap was statistically clear in this young population, but it may shrink as the breed population ages.
