How long do Golden Retrievers live?
Golden Retrievers usually live 10 to 12 years, according to the American Kennel Club. That is a bit shorter than the Labrador range of 11 to 13 years. The main reason is cancer, which causes most deaths in the breed. Goldens weigh 55 to 75 pounds, so they age on the large dog chart.
Golden Retriever life expectancy and cancer
In 2012, the Morris Animal Foundation began following 3,044 Golden Retrievers in the United States for their whole lives. It is called the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study. Vets examine each dog every year, and owners fill out surveys. The goal is to learn what raises or lowers the risk of cancer and other disease.
What it has found so far:
- By 2021, 352 study dogs had died, and 70 percent of those deaths were from cancer.
- By August 2022, the foundation reported that cancer caused roughly 75 percent of recorded deaths.
- The four cancers the study tracks most closely are hemangiosarcoma, lymphoma, high grade mast cell tumor and osteosarcoma (bone cancer).
- By the end of 2024, 16.1 percent of the dogs had been diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma. That report is a preprint, which means it had not yet passed full peer review.
Older data points the same way. A 1998 Golden Retriever Club of America survey of 1,444 dogs found that cancer caused 61 percent of 420 deaths. A necropsy study of 652 Goldens at a US vet school hospital found 65 percent died of cancer. Studies of Goldens in the UK and Scandinavia found lower rates, 20 to 39 percent, which suggests that bloodlines or setting may matter.
Who got hemangiosarcoma most?
In the lifetime study, dogs aged 7 to 9 had higher odds than younger or older dogs. Males and heavier dogs also had higher odds. Most cases were inside the body, and survival after diagnosis was very short. Dogs with the skin form survived longer.
Signs to take seriously in a Golden
The AVMA lists warning signs of cancer in pets. These include swelling of the belly, bleeding from the mouth or nose, trouble breathing, lumps, sores that do not heal, weight loss and lameness. If your Golden suddenly collapses or seems very weak, call your vet right away.
Golden Retriever age in human years
| Age | Human years | DNA clock |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 15 | 31 |
| 2 | 24 | 42 |
| 3 | 28 | 49 |
| 4 | 32 | 53 |
| 5 | 36 | 57 |
| 6 | 45 | 60 |
| 7 | 50 | 62 |
| 8 | 55 | 64 |
| 9 | 61 | 66 |
| 10 | 66 | 68 |
| 11 | 72 | 69 |
| 12 | 77 | 71 |
The DNA clock column comes from the UCSD study of Labrador blood. Goldens are close in size and type, so the clock is a reasonable second opinion for this breed.
Golden Retriever senior age
Treat a Golden as a senior from about 8. The AVMA rule of the last 25 percent of life gives 7.5 to 9 years with the AKC range. Senior pets need a vet visit at least twice a year, and a Golden's checks should include a hands on lump check and talk about belly and heart signs.
Habits that help
- Do a monthly lump check. Run your hands over the whole body. Note the size and place of any lump, and show new ones to your vet.
- Keep the waist visible. Goldens love food. Lean dogs are easier on joints, and the AVMA links obesity with cancer and other disease in senior pets.
- Keep records. Write down weight, energy and appetite each month. Small changes are easier to see on paper.
- Ask about your breeder's health testing. Ask about OFA hip and elbow results for both parents.

Golden Retriever FAQ
How long do Golden Retrievers live?
The AKC lists 10 to 12 years. That is about one year shorter than the AKC range for Labrador Retrievers, a breed of similar size.
What do most Golden Retrievers die from?
Cancer. In the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study, about 70 to 75 percent of recorded deaths were from cancer. A 1998 breed club survey found 61 percent.
What is hemangiosarcoma?
A fast spreading cancer of blood vessel cells. It often starts in the spleen or heart. It was the most common cancer in the lifetime study, found in 16.1 percent of the 3,044 dogs by the end of 2024.
When is a Golden Retriever a senior?
At about 7.5 to 9 years, using the AKC range and the AVMA rule of the last 25 percent of life. The AVMA guide for large dogs gives 8 to 9.
How old is an 8 year old Golden Retriever in human years?
About 55 on the large dog chart, and about 64 by the DNA clock.
