Labrador Retriever life expectancy
Labrador Retrievers usually live 11 to 13 years, according to the AKC. A UK study of 2013 vet records found a median age at death of 12.0 years. A 2024 study of more than 584,000 UK dogs put the Lab median at 13.1 years. Neutered Labs and non chocolate Labs lived longer in the 2013 data.
Labs are one of the most studied breeds, so there is more data here than for most dogs.
| Study | Measure | Years |
|---|---|---|
| McGreevy et al. 2018 (VetCompass) | Median age at death | 12.0 |
| McMillan et al. 2024 | Median lifespan | 13.1 |
| Teng et al. 2022 | Life expectancy at birth | 11.77 |
| Wang et al. 2020 | Average Lab lifespan used to test the DNA clock | 12 |
Coat color and neutering
The 2018 VetCompass study of 33,320 Labs found two gaps worth knowing:
- Chocolate Labs had a median age at death of 10.7 years. Black and yellow Labs had 12.1. Chocolate Labs also had more ear infections (23.4 percent, versus 12.8 percent in black Labs) and more hot spots on the skin.
- Neutered Labs had a median of 12.5 years, compared with 11.6 for entire (not neutered) Labs.
These are links found in records, not proof of cause. The chocolate group was only 34 deaths. Talk with your vet before you make any choice about neutering, since timing and health factors vary by dog.
Why the DNA clock fits Labs best
In 2020, a team at UC San Diego compared DNA chemical tags in the blood of 104 dogs, mostly Labs, with data from people. They found that human age is about 16 × ln(dog age) + 31. With this formula, a 12 year old Lab, the average lifespan they used, matches a 70 year old person. That lines up with human life expectancy worldwide, which made the authors more confident in the curve. You can read the full study free on PubMed Central.
For other breeds, the clock is only a rough view. For a Lab, it is the closest thing to a tested answer.
Lab age in human years
| Age | Human years | DNA clock |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 15 | 31 |
| 2 | 24 | 42 |
| 3 | 28 | 49 |
| 4 | 32 | 53 |
| 5 | 36 | 57 |
| 6 | 45 | 60 |
| 7 | 50 | 62 |
| 8 | 55 | 64 |
| 9 | 61 | 66 |
| 10 | 66 | 68 |
| 11 | 72 | 69 |
| 12 | 77 | 71 |
| 13 | 82 | 72 |
| 14 | 88 | 73 |
| 15 | 93 | 74 |
| 16 | 99 | 75 |
The DNA clock runs higher than the size chart up to age 10. From age 11 on, the size chart is higher.
Common Labrador health problems
From full records of 2,074 Labs, the most common problems in one year were ear infections (10.4 percent), overweight or obesity (8.8 percent) and degenerative joint disease (5.5 percent). The leading causes of death were musculoskeletal problems (24.5 percent) and cancer (21.1 percent).
Weight stands out. Adult males in the study averaged 35.2 kg and females 30.4 kg. Overweight was linked with neutering in males in this data. Ask your vet whether to change food amounts after neutering.
Lab puppy growth
A 2004 study in the Journal of Nutrition weighed Lab puppies every week. They hit half their adult weight at about 18.6 weeks and 99 percent at about 52 weeks. Use the puppy weight calculator with the large setting to check a Lab puppy against that curve.
When does a Lab become a senior?
Plan for senior care at about 8 years. The AVMA guide puts large breeds at 8 to 9 years. Applying the AVMA rule of the last 25 percent of life to the AKC range gives 8.25 to 9.75 years. Seniors should see a vet twice a year or more.
Lab care tips based on the data
- Measure every meal. Obesity was the second most common problem.
- Check the ears weekly. Ear infection was the most common problem, and more so in chocolate Labs.
- Watch for stiffness after rest. Joint disease and musculoskeletal problems were top causes of illness and death.
- Check for lumps monthly, since cancer caused about 1 in 5 deaths.

Labrador FAQ
How long do Labs live?
Most Labs live 11 to 13 years, the AKC range. UK studies found a median of 12.0 years in 2013 data and 13.1 years in a larger 2024 study.
Do chocolate Labs have a shorter lifespan?
In one UK study, yes. Chocolate Labs that died had a median age of 10.7 years, compared with 12.1 for black and yellow Labs. The chocolate group was small, 34 dogs, so more research is needed.
What is the oldest Labrador in the research?
In the 2018 VetCompass study, the oldest Lab was 16.0 years old at death. The UK life tables also ran to age 16 for Labradors.
When is a Labrador a senior?
At about 8 to 9 years, using the AVMA guide for large breeds. The AVMA rule of the last 25 percent of life gives 8.25 to 9.75 years with the AKC range.
Is the DNA dog age formula accurate for Labs?
It is the best match of any breed, because the UCSD team built it from Labrador blood. It still gives an estimate, not a medical age.
